Meet the Skidmarks

"So who are these Skidmarks?" you ask? And why would they ever name their crew the Skidmarks?  Well the first question I can answer, the second...guess it's just my kind of humor. Being a huge fan of puns and a minor fan of immature jokes, it seemed a perfect fit. I apologize in advance, as there will be many throughout this site. Hope you can handle it. I just never get tired of them. Man, just thinking about them gets me all geared up!  Ok. Ok. I'll give you a break. Well how else would you expect my jokes tu-be?

SO! As we one by one graduate from our beloved College of Charleston, we look on to see what will be our next step (or pedal) in life. Not ready to jump (or bunny hop) into a "day time job", I started to think of alternatives. Well...I like to cycle. I am ITCHING to see this country. I want to do things I have never done before or may not have the opportunity to do later in life. I want to go on a journey. So what could I possibly do to accomplish all this?

I came up with a bicycle journey across the states. Full of small town USA, unfamiliar faces, sharing stories with curious locals, testing home brewed beers, helping at farmers markets, confronting personal challenges, learning new skills, building friendships, flat tires, and lots of oatmeal...I can see this being one of the most eye opening and exciting adventures of my life. But, I can't do it alone. Every vessel must have its crew. So, Meet the Skidmarks.

Samantha Theall

Samantha is a trooper to the max. I applaud and respect her for sticking with it and preparing to come on the trip. Physical, financial, mental commitments. She made them all. Many interested partners came and left, but Samantha was the only one who actually did some riding with me.

Bike touring is very taxing on the body, and the nations terrain can be relentless. Unfortunately, it took its toll on Samantha. After a few days of battling the steep hills, pounding sun, and long hours, Samantha realized that it was just not time yet for her on the bike. Her determination was there, but her body was not.

So, for all of you wondering, Samantha is no longer riding with me on my tour. But good news..she has begun her own cross country adventure (via car) working on farms and raising hell around the country. I'm happy for her for leading here own adventure and wish her the best! Check out her blog frequently!

Randy Galbraith

Hailing from Port Huron, Michigan, Randy embarked on adventure similar to mine. Planning to bike from Michigan to California with a buddy, Randy's partner had enough when they hit Knoxville, TN. Wanted to continue, Randy began a search around the area for another partner.  Through my history and connection with Tennessee Valley Bicycles and his current predicament in Knoxville, we connected.

I was in Memphis. He was in Knoxville. Through some lucky calls and conversations, I took Randy on as a temporary Skidmark. Having lost his partner and not having the experience or knowledge of riding by himself, we spent a good 8 days riding and camping while lending him as man teaching tips and advice I could think of.  Preparing him for a tour by himself and showing him the joys of riding solo. best of luck Randy.

Hiroyuki Inuma

I met Hiro as I was leaving Minden, NE. The first bicycle tourer I have seen since I started this trip. Hiro is a 22 year old from a town near Tokyo, Japan. He has been in the United States for around 2 months. After arriving in New York City, he set out on his extremely modest bicycle and set up to cross the country to Los Angeles. It was a great experience to meet someone who appreciates this country's landscapes and people as much as I am. He loved the views of the States and said the people have been wonderful.

We only rode together for one day before we parted ways as I headed to Colorado and he headed to Kansas to "find cowboys." We shared a campsite, sipped whiskey, taught each other English/Japanese, and talked about our trips as best we could. I wish him the best of luck and hope the US continues to treat him well.

Phil Hathaway

Hoshi Hathaway! A fella that helps keep Hoshi Motors of Boulder tickin. We spent months chatting bikes, probably when we shouldn't have been. My favorite part of the work day fell when it was just Phil and I in the shop talking the latest gossip on bikes and the coolest anti-sporty bicycle gear and do-dads.

Anyhow, Phil joined me on my exodus trip from Boulder to continue on my trek around the country. He kicked my butt up the hills to Estes Park. He's welcome anytime to jump in the saddle and meet me on the road. But in the mean time, keep those Honda's running.

Dominic and Charlotte Luther

The brother sister duo from Manchester, England! Well close to it anyways. I met up with these cats in Republic, Washington and decided to link up for a few days a ridin'. We were going on generally the same direction and at the time we were going to split ways, they convinced me to check out Vancouver with them. How could I say no to two British accents?

Dominic is on his 5th month of his WORLD TOUR. That guy.. He's got guts...and a sweet bike. Best best best luck to him. I wish his good fortune continues to keep him company on his adventure around the world. Older sister Charlotte decided to join on for the USA/Canada leg of Dominic's tour. She can beat you up the hills and look good doing it. She will stick around the tour until Phoenix and then explore the Southwest til the visa sends her back home. Don't underestimate this broad or she'll leave you in the dust.

We spent some marvelous days of riding and nights of chattin. We have split up, but the way this trip has been going, there's a good chance we will meet again. I'll keep my hope up. Bloggin happens here!

Genevieve Hudson

Months before my departure, I had a half dozen folks "wanting to join me on my tour." One by one, they all dropped off...including Genevieve. "Psht!" I'd say. So When Genevieve called to say she wanted to join me for a bit, I knew Id only believe it when I saw it.

Genevieve stuck to it and met me in Bellingham, Washington for a little taste of touring. It was her first tour and her first time being on a bike for more than 25 miles. Like a pro, she pedaled uphills, ate odd combination lunches, and slept on strangers floors and couches. After miles of riding, days of exploring, and that little taste of freedom!, I've converted her. She wants to tour. So hurry up and graduate! A Skidmark for life!
